Emotet Malware

New Zealand organisations have noted an increase in Emotet malware activity recently.

What is Emotet?

Emotet is a malware threat which is commonly spread by email, using infected attachments, as well as embedded website links. These emails may appear to come from trusted sources, as Emotet takes over the email accounts of its victims. This helps trick users into downloading it onto their machine. From there, it can steal data and credentials such as bank logins and financial information.

To date, Emotet malware has hit individuals, businesses and government entities across the world, and New Zealand is no exception with a number of Kiwi organisations being affected by it.

With more people working from home, the possibility of infection is increased

How can I protect myself from Emotet?

The first step is to learn how Emotet works, and ensure your employees are aware of it as well.

Here are a few additional steps you can take:
1. Keep your computer/endpoints up-to-date with the latest patches for Microsoft Windows.
2. Don’t download suspicious attachments or click a link you’re not 100% sure of.
3. Educate yourself and your users on creating a strong password. Also consider using two-factor authentication (if you don’t already)
4. You can protect yourself and your users from Emotet with your Human Firewall – click here to learn more about Security Culture Change Training
5. Talk to us about Exchange Antivirus or SMX Email Security

Suspect you’ve already been infected by Emotet?
